Day 3 - Venice to Genoa

As it turned out, the clothing was fully dry this morning. We may still get Venitian jungle foot rot from wading in the Holy (disgusting) waters of St Marks Square but that 's a chance we'll have to take. The bus to Genoa was quite a brisk hike from the main Square and we arrived with barely 5 minutes to spare. Setting off at 9:40, the ride was supposed to get us into Genoa at 3:30.
An accident on one of the freeways shortly after Verona resulted in a detour which, for some reason the driver couldn't register on his GPS so he ended up retracing the same route twice before a highway worker steered him in the right direction. While the route was very scenic, it did add almost an hour to the trip. Our hotel was a pleasant 1km walk from the bus depot but we took our time stopping to shoot photos of  buildings and monuments along the way. The Hotel Cairoli was on the third floor of an old building, accessed by an elevator that was probably powered by hamsters or arthritic mice. The doors were barely wide enough for me to squeeze my sorry ass through and that's all I'm saying on the matter!
After checking in and changing we took a brief endlessly uphill walk to the Spianata  Castelletto (Spanish fort?).which offered a spectacular view of the whole town and the Bay and shipyards beyond.  Returning to the old town we marvelled at the beautiful old buildings and churches. One could easily spend several days here but already rebooked hotels in Cinque Terre prevented us from extending our stay.
Dinner thes evening was a capresse salad- tomatoes and bull mozzarella followed by grilled squid with salad and mixed vegetables. Dessert was a store bought copy of Jaffa cakes that paled in quality compared to Marks & Sparks.
Our train tomorrow leaves at 12:45. Enough time to poke around for an hour or so after breakfast if all goes as planned. Does it ever???🙄
